Here’s a look at the top 10 minorities in cartoons posts written in 2015, based on site traffic in Google Analytics. Note the results differ greatly from the (low-response) poll I just ran.
- Fire (DC Comics)
- Superstretch and Microwoman
- Apollo and Midnighter
- Women in STEM
- Oliver Wendell Jones
- “Steven Universe”
- Tasmanian Devil (DC Comics)
- Natasha Irons
- LGBT Pride Month
- “Clarence”
The most popular post is Fire, a DC Comics superheroine from Brazil. Following in second place are Filmation’s short-lived Superstrech and Microwoman, a husband-and-wife superhero couple. In third place are Apollo and Midnighter, a same-sex superhero couple.
Half of the top 10 posts are LGBT related, including the roundup “best of” post I wrote for LGBT Pride Month in June. Several African-Americans also are in the top 10, including: the aforementioned Superstrech and Microwoman; Natasha Irons (the daughter of superhero John Henry “Steel” Irons); and Oliver Wendell Jones of “Bloom County” fame.
Another “best of” roundup post also got attention: women characters in STEM fields, which of course will still be important in 2016 and beyond.
Some of these are highly popular TV shows, in the case of “Steven Universe” and (to a lesser degree) “Clarence.” Thus, it’s not surprising that they’d make it into the top 10 list, especially with the positive attention “Steven Universe” has received.
