Time again for a blog status update post.

Happy anniversary to the site

Today marks the 16th anniversary of Diverse Tech Geek. Yes, this site’s now old enough to drive.

The state of the internet’s been on my mind recently. The traditional open web, as well as text-based media such as blogs, have taken heavy hits lately, between: the rise of AI generated slop; AI bots scraping sites (such as this one); Google’s quality decline as a search engine; and the general “pivot to video” via social networks like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram replacing independent (and text-based) sites/forums/blogs. Never mind not everyone is comfortable on a camera (and thus the video emphasis feels a bit gatekeeping), or that making and editing video is a lot of work.

Still, I’ve kept up with my blogging efforts, despite the aforementioned obstacles While it’s unclear at times how many people are actually reading these posts, I’m glad they’re being read by someone.

A new web host?

On another note, I’m currently considering moving to a new web host. While the current one, GreenGeeks, has mostly been OK, it’s also not the cheapest host, especially for annual-only payments. Thus I’m wondering if there’s something a bit more affordable, without sacrificing quality.

As the year’s up by late August, any move will be within the next several weeks or so. If and when the change in web hosts happen, I’ll let you all know, on here and/or on Mastodon/Bluesky.
