My thoughts
June brings the usual Pride Month movies and TV shows to streaming services. Given the current political climate, however, I wonder if things will be muted this year. One major film to look forward to is “Noah’s Arc: The Movie” on Paramount+ (via Showtime). The original 2000s series on Logo centered around a group of gay Black friends and their lives in Los Angeles. A reunion special was streamed on YouTube during the pandemic in 2020, showing what the characters have been up to since the series ended. Presumably the new movie will pick up from where the YouTube special left off? The original cast is back for the film, including Wilson Cruz, who’s already been in a recent Paramount-related production (“Star Trek: Discovery”).
On Hulu, “The Bravest Knight” is getting another batch of episodes. It’s another show on this list with Wilson Cruz’s involvement; Cruz voices Prince Andrew, the husband of the titular knight. Again, I’m not optimistic about kids’ media with any LGBTQ representation in the near future, between a bigoted presidential administration trying to erase any semblance of diversity and media conglomerates too willing to bend the knee out of financial self-interest (see: Paramount). That said, Hulu still has a Pride related hub (“Hulu Has Pride”), highlighting “The Bravest Knight” and other LGBTQ material; I assume for June they’ll still make this a featured category on their main page. I’ll be checking to see how Pride Month this year is treated by streaming services.
On the DVD and Blu-ray front this month, “Looney Tunes Collectors’ Vault” volume 1 is being released. The new Blu-ray series consists of 50 cartoons; half have never been released to home video before, while the other half are previous DVD-only releases that are new to Blu-ray (and HD). The current “Doctor Who” run’s first season, starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, is also getting a Blu-ray release.
“The Day the Earth Blew Up” arrives on HBO Max (formerly Max, formerly HBO Max) in June. Of course, it’s also on DVD and Blu-ray, with the HBO Max debut coming a month after the physical media release.
Sports stuff
The NBA and NHL hold their championship finals in June. Per the NHL’s TV coverage, you’ll need cable or a streaming service with live streaming of TNT (HBO Max, Sling TV, YouTube TV, etc.) to watch the cable-only Stanley Cup championship. Something a major North American sports league is apparently just fine with and doesn’t find questionable, versus the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, and World Series all being available on over-the-air TV for free.
Speaking of which, the NBA Finals will air on ABC as usual, with a streaming simulcast available through ESPN+.
