My thoughts
“Toy Story 5” opens this month. Yes, a part five to a film that originally came out 31 years ago. At this point, kids who saw “Toy Story” in theaters in 1995 (i.e. Millennials) are now old enough to bring their own kids to the theater to see “Toy Story 5.”
“Dragon Striker” is a new animated series coming to Disney+. It’s a sports fantasy series done in an anime style; it’s animated by a French studio with ties to Disney. The show revolves around a sport that’s a magical fantasy version of soccer (just in time for the World Cup).
An “Adventure Time” spin-off series is coming to Hulu. I wonder how the Ellisons plan post-Paramount/Warner Bros. merger to rationalize most of their newly-acquired animation library will mostly be on services they don’t own. Especially when A) they’ll own three major streaming services (Paramount+, Pluto TV, HBO Max) and B) one of the purported excuses for this merger is taking advantage of a larger catalog. That said, Nickelodeon made-for-TV movies tend to go to Netflix, and Prime Video has older “SpongeBob” and “Paw Patrol” episodes.
Coming to Blu-ray this month is “Dastardly & Muttley in Their Flying Machines,” a “Wacky Races” spin-off starring Hanna-Barbera mainstay villains Dick Dastardly and Muttley. It’s also known as “that ‘stop the pigeon’ cartoon,” per the catchy theme song and being shorter to say than the show’s full title, which is a reference to early aircraft (and a then-recent 1965 movie). Each episode sees the two villains try and fail to capture a messenger pigeon using various goofy airplanes. If the plot seems familiar, one of the writers is Michael Maltese, the main writer for Chuck Jones’ Road Runner shorts.
Sports stuff
June brings the Stanley Cup Finals and the NBA Finals, as usual. Both finals this year will air on ABC; they’ll also be available through the ESPN app for subscribers.
However, outside of basketball, hockey, and “Heated Rivalry” fans, the biggest sports event this month globally is the World Cup, which runs from mid-June to mid-July. Soccer, of course, is the world’s most popular sport, and part of the World Cup is being held in the United States.
That said, hotel reservations are lower than expected; the BBC says hotel/game ticket prices and the US’s current political state are to blame. People notes US tourism, especially from Canada, is sharply down. International tourists, especially ones who aren’t white, don’t want to shell out inflated prices and worry about ICE goons picking them up, all for what’s supposed to be an optional pleasure trip. Emphasis on “optional”; Canada and Mexico are right next door and also holding World Cup events. In Canada’s case, they also have a similar culture to the US (no offense to Canadians reading), so non-North American tourists who want to experience US-style culture can get such from Canada.
