Summer movies start hitting home video

There’s some interesting things coming to DVD and Blu-ray in late August. Early summer theatrical releases “The Sheep Detectives” and “The Mandalorian and Grogu” are coming to video. I saw the latter at the theater; it was OK, but as others noted, it did feel a bit like an extended TV show episode.

There’s also old-school cartoons “Speed Racer” and “He-Man” hitting Blu-ray for the first time. The latter will certainly get more attention than the “Masters of the Universe” film released in June, which flopped.

Finally, there’s “Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated” arriving on Blu-ray. While I prefer “What’s New Scooby-Doo?” for aughts-era Scooby, “Mystery Incorporated” certainly has plenty of fans, who’ll appreciate a high-definition release.

“Coyote vs. ACME” (finally) arrives

Coming to theaters this month is the long-awaited release of “Coyote vs. ACME,” the “Looney Tunes” film starring Wile E. Coyote. The plot: after years of backfiring ACME gadgets in his quest to catch the Road Runner, the Coyote finally gets fed up. Inspired by a low-rent attorney’s TV ad, Wile E. hires him in order to sue ACME.

The marketing for the film has played up its tortured history, as shown by the tagline “The Movie ACME Doesn’t Want You To See.” No doubt a reference to Warner Bros. trying to shelve “Coyote vs. ACME” as a tax write-off, before selling it to third-party distributor Ketchup Entertainment. The fact ACME is shown as an Amazon-esque gargantuan and powerful conglomerate certainly carries weight these days, especially with Warner’s own still-pending merger with Paramount.

Sports stuff

Preseason NFL football returns this month (check local listings for your team), which I suppose is a sign that summer is winding down. Otherwise, there’s not much else of note, besides tennis’ US Open starting August 23.
