Liam Neeson action film “Taken 3” opened in first place at the box office, earning $40.4 million. That’s nearly all of its $48 million budget, which it’s long since earned back overseas ($51.4 million there).
Rising to second place from a limited release is the Martin Luther King/civil rights movement film “Selma,” which earned $11.2 million (+1,668.9% from last weekend). Its total so far stands at $13.5 million. Imagine it’ll see steady business next weekend for Martin Luther King Day.
“Into the Woods” came in third place, earning $9.8 million (-47.9%). Its totals stand at $105.3 million domestic, $15.3 million overseas, and $120.6 million globally.
“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” dropped to fourth place, earning $9.4 million (-56.6%). To date “The Hobbit”‘s earned $236.5 million domestic, $545.3 million overseas, and $781.8 million globally.
In seventh place is “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.” It’s earned $6.7 million (-53.9%) this weekend, and stands currently at $99.5 million domestic, $147.3 million overseas, and $246.8 million globally.
“Annie” came in eighth place, earning $4.9 million (-56.3%). So far, it’s earned $79.4 million domestic, $19.4 million overseas, and $98.8 million overseas. I imagine it’ll cross the $100 million global threshold sometime this week. Overseas numbers should see a boost (it’s opened in China, for instance).
“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1” came in tenth place, earning $3.8 million (-50.4%). So far, it’s earned $329.5 million domestic, $371.6 million, and $701.1 million globally.
“Big Hero 6” has fallen out of the top 10 domestically, likely for good. However, it’s still playing overseas, and is proving fairly popular, including in Japan, where it’s now the second-highest-grossing Disney animated release behind “Frozen.” Globally, it’s earned $409 million so far.
Next weekend sees opening several films: thriller “Blackhat,” family film “Paddington,” and comedy “The Wedding Ringer.”
