My thoughts
February brings… yet another price hike from Netflix. It’s now $8 a month for the ad-based tier, $18 a month for the standard ad-free tier, and $25 a month for the ad-free 4K tier.
Disney+ debuts this month “Win or Lose,” an eight-episode miniseries produced by Pixar. However, it’s not in the above recommendations list for a reason—the series was delayed until February so Disney could edit or dub out any references to one character being transgender. Coming on the heels of Disney yanking a “Moon Girl” episode about Brooklyn, this isn’t a good look for the Mouse House. And again, I hope this isn’t a sign of things reverting to the way they were in the 90s/00s, when LGBTQ folk in non-adult cartoons basically didn’t exist.
There’s a bit of activity at the movies this month. For starters, there’s a Captain America movie featuring the Sam Wilson version of Cap, which is already getting attention from the usual suspects (i.e., racists). We’re also getting a third “Paddington” film, plus a 2D animated “Looney Tunes” film that somehow escaped the axe of David Zaslav.
Sports stuff
The Super Bowl, the biggest sporting event of the year in the United States, takes place on February 9. This year’s game is between the Eagles and Chiefs, the same match-up as in 2023. Additionally, the Chiefs have been in every Super Bowl this decade save for one. At least for variety there’s the ads, as well as the halftime show, this year featuring rapper Kendrick Lamar. The game this year is on Fox; as such, I suggest skipping the pre-game show, which will inevitably have some fawning Fox News interview with Trump. The game will also stream for free on Tubi, the Fox-owned free ad-supported streaming service.
For hockey fans, there’s no NHL All-Star Game this year. Instead, NHL players will compete in a tournament called the “4 Nations Face-Off,” a mid-February contest between Canada, the US, Finland, and Sweden.
As usual, the NBA’s All-Star Game will take place over Presidents Day weekend.
