Microsoft’s announced that starting with Windows 10, it’s planning to downgrade Internet Explorer in favor of a newer, more modern browser it’s working on, so far code-named “Project Spartan.” However, IE isn’t quite fully dead. Microsoft plans to continue supporting Explorer for Windows 10, citing legacy business usage and applicatons tied to the old browser.

I can see why Microsoft wants a more modern browser. Explorer’s reputation has taken a hit over the years over security issues. There’s also the growth in popularity of rival browsers (Chrome, Firefox, etc.). I used to use IE on my Macs in the late 90s and early 2000s, but between moving to Linux and Microsoft dropping support, I switched to Firefox. These days, I mainly use Chrome, and occasionally also Firefox. (I only use Safari on infrequent occasions, such as viewing Apple’s keynotes.)
Hopefully Microsoft will consider releasing Spartan (or whatever it’s called) to non-Windows machines as well.
