This week’s minorities in cartoons entry is Sasquatch, a Marvel comics superhero. Sasquatch (real name: Dr. Walter Langkowski) first appeared in “Uncanny X-Men” #120 (April 1979). He was created by John Byrne.

Background

Walter is a physicist and native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He’s also a former player for the Green Bay Packers football team.

Walter was experimenting with gamma radiation, wanting to created a creature similar to the Hulk, but more controlled. Exposing himself to gamma rays, Dr. Langkowski was turned into a tall, hairy creature. Eventually, Walter learned that he’d actually opened a gateway to another dimension, from which a creature had entered his body.

Langkowski learned to tame his feral tendencies and keep his intelligence once transformed. He named himself “Sasquatch” after his resemblance to Bigfoot. Eventually, Sasquatch joined Canada’s top superhero team, Alpha Flight.

Sasquatch’s powers consist of superhuman strength and stamina.

Walter appeared at a Jewish superhero Hanukkah party (along with Wiccan, the Thing, and Kitty Pryde) in 2011’s “Marvel Holiday Special.”

Sasquatch appeared in the 90s X-Men cartoon, where he was voiced by Harvey Atkin.
