“Guardians of the Galaxy” is the domestic box office champ of 2014

“Guardians of the Galaxy,” starring characters the general public had never heard of until its release, is the top grossing film at the domestic box office for 2014. The film starring Rocket Raccoon and his friends has earned $332.8 million to date.

The North American top 10 films are as follows. Figures are taken from Box Office Mojo and are as of this writing:

2. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1: $308,939,828
3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier: $259,766,572
4. The LEGO Movie: $257,760,692
5. Transformers: Age of Extinction: $245,439,076
6. Maleficent: $241,410,378
7. X-Men: Days of Future Past: $233,921,534
8. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: $208,545,589
9. The Amazing Spider-Man 2: $202,853,933
10. Big Hero 6: $201,498,903

A reason I waited until now to write this list is that “Big Hero 6” has only just crossed over the $200 million threshold and surpassed the previous tenth place ranker, “Godzilla” (which earned $200,676,069).

Of course, the North American box office listings differ from what the world as a whole liked—the global top grossing film, “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” is only fifth place in North America. The box office figures for animation also differ domestically versus globally. “The LEGO Movie” is the top grosser in North America, but globally, it’s “How to Train Your Dragon 2.”
