The third issue of this miniseries might be the best one yet, as we finally see the Enterprise crew and the Legionnaires meet. Of course, this first meeting takes the tradition of the superhero side of things, as the characters initially fight before realizing they’re on the same side. The Enterprise crew and the Legionnaires then decide to go on two separate missions to figure out what’s going on, but first must work together to defeat an attack by what looks like an amalgam of their mutual foes.

My favorite moments:

  • Sulu kicking butt at several points during the story, both with and without weapons. Also, the subsequent discussion of it with Chekhov and Shadow Lass (poor Chameleon Boy…).
  • Brainiac 5 and Spock’s “fight” being more of mutual discussion (of course), though I’m not sure (or forget) if Brainy was this snarky in early 80s Legion stories.
  • Superboy does finally appear, during Cosmic Boy’s montage describing Earth-1’s 31st Century to Kirk and company.
  • The Vulcan neck pinch!
  • Kirk’s arms-akimbo pose on the page before his explanation of the “Star Trek” universe to the Legionnaires. A very Kirk-like pose.

Next issue looks to bring more time-travel hijinks, plus whatever the heck’s going on in the present in this warped world.
