“Guardians of the Galaxy” is again the top-grossing film at the box office. The film earned $16.3 million; its domestic total stands at $274.5 million, and international total at $273.1 million, for a global take of $547.7 million. Not only has “Guardians” domestically surpassed “Transformers: Age of Extinction” to be the summer’s top-earning film, it’s also finally surpassed “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” to become the domestic top earning film of the year. Globally, “Transformers” is the top-earning film of the summer and year, with no hope of anything else surpassing it…
Meanwhile, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” again came in second place, earning $11.8 million. Its domestic total stands at $162.4 million and international total at $112.1 million, for a global total of $274.5 million.
Finally, “Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” not only ended its title with a preposition, but also pretty much any box office presence as a big flop. The film fell out of the top 10 this weekend, with a total earned to date of $15.4 million. No sign on Box Office Mojo of what its budget cost, but pretty sure it’s way more than that. The film earned less this weekend than “Cantinflas,” a limited-release documentary about the life of the popular Mexican entertainer.
And that wraps up the summer movie season. Expect shortly my post wrapping up the blockbusters this summer. As for next weekend, there’s only one new film opening (“The Identical”), so I don’t see things changing much from this week’s standings.
