Moviegoers still think “Gone Girl” is a “real gone” film (50s/60s slang for “really cool,” if you’re wondering), as it came in first place at the box office again. “Gone Girl” earned $26.8 million this weekend (-28.6% from last weekend); its total stands at $78.3 million domestic, $62.1 million overseas, and $140.4 million globally.
Opening in third place (behind another horror film, “Dracula Untold”) is the family film “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.” The film, based on the children’s book, earned $19.1 million. On a budget of $28 million, it’s an excellent opening.
“The Maze Runner” came in in eighth place, earning $7.5 million (-35.5%). Its totals stand at $83.8 million domestic, $139.8 million overseas, and $223.6 million globally.
In ninth place is “The Boxtrolls,” which earned $6.7 million (-44.3%). “The Boxtrolls” now stands at $41 million domestic, $31.8 million overseas, and $72.8 million total.
Finally falling out of the top ten are “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Dolphin Tale 2.” “Guardians” now has earned $326.1 million domestic, $361 million overseas, and $687 million globally. Forbes feels it’s within reach of passing the global totals of “Amazing Spider-Man 2” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” Meanwhile, “Dolphin Tale 2” has earned $43 million globally.
Next week sees opening romance film “The Best of Me,” war film “Fury,” and the next major animated release, “The Book of Life.”
