Topping the box office this weekend was “Jurassic World,” dropping only 51.1% from its mind-numbing opening weekend, and earning a whopping $102 million. Its totals now stand at $398.2 million domestic, $583.1 million overseas, and $981.3 million globally. It should soon pass the $1 billion mark, as one of the fastest earning films to do so.
Opening in second, however, is the latest Pixar film, “Inside Out.” Nobody, including me, expected it to beat “Jurassic World” this weekend; even if “World” had plummeted 75% from last weekend, it’d still be a sizable box office take. That, however, was based on assuming a modest box office opening like previous Pixar films. Instead, “Inside Out” Opened with $91.1 million, which is not only the second-highest opening for a Pixar film ever (behind “Toy Story 3”), but also the highest ever opening for an original film, versus a sequel or other-media spinoff. It also makes this one of the biggest female-centric films of the year, since the film centers around the anthropomorphic emotions in a teenage girl’s head. Overseas, “Inside Out” has earned $41 million already, for a global total of $132.1 million.
Elsewhere, in fourth place is “San Andreas,” which earned $8.2 million (-23.8%). The film’s totals stand at $132.2 million domestic and $282 million overseas, or $414.2 million globally.
In seventh place is “Pitch Perfect 2,” which earned $3.3 million (-48.4%). Its totals now stand at $177.5 million domestic, $94.5 million overseas, and $272 million globally. “Pitch Perfect 2” came in two notches below the fifth place opening of this weekend’s only other new film, the African-American-produced dramedy “Dope.”
In eighth place is “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which earned $2.8 million (-30.8%), with totals standing at $143.6 million domestic, $202.5 million overseas, and $346.1 million globally.
In ninth place is “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” The superhero film made another $2.7 million (-25.9%), giving it a domestic total of $451 million and a global total of $1.369 billion.
Finally, in tenth place is “Tomorrowland,” which earned $2 million (-42.5%), giving it a domestic total of $87.7 million and a global total of $196 million, slightly above its $190 million budget. It’s a good thing “Inside Out” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” are big hits for Disney.
Opening next weekend sees the continuation of a busy summer box office, as two films open: family drama “Max,” and R-rated Seth MacFarlane comedy sequel “Ted 2.” While the latter’s been much hyped (to my annoyance), it remains to be seen if “Family Guy as a teddy bear” will entice enough audiences to flock to it over Pixar/dinosaurs.
