“Furious 7” once again topped the box office this weekend, with no significant new competition. The film earned $60.6 million (-58.8% from last weekend). So far, it’s earned $252.5 million domestically, $548 million overseas, and a whopping $800.5 million globally. Box Office Mojo notes that not only is “Furious 7” record-breaking, but on track to finish with $1.3 billion. Not adjusting for inflation, that would make “Furious 7” the fifth top-grossing film of all time, behind “Avatar,” “Titanic,” “The Avengers,” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” Quite an impressive performance, though with “Avengers: Age of Ultron” opening April 22 overseas (and May 1 in North America, for what amounts to dumb Hollywood marketing/piracy-fighting reasons), I wonder if that’ll dent some of “Furious 7″‘s global earnings.
Elsewhere, “Home” pulled in another $19 million (-29.7%), earning to date a total of $129.6 million domestically, $112.7 million overseas, and $242.2 million globally. I assume it’ll match its $135 million budget domestically sometime this week. “Home” is at this point in its run doing as well as “The Croods” and “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” DreamWorks’ two most successful films in recent years. That’s good news for DreamWorks and for “Home.”
“Cinderella” came in fifth place, earning $7.2 million (-29%). The film’s so far made $180.8 million domestically, $256 million overseas, and $436.8 million globally.
“The Divergent Series: Insurgent” came in sixth place, earning $6.9 million (-32.4%). “Insurgent”‘s made $114.8 million domestically and the same amount overseas, for a global total of $229.7 globally.
Dropping out of the top 10 is “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” which has earned $124.5 million domestically and $392.1 million globally.
Opening next weekend is comedy “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2,” horror film “Unfriended,” and Disney nature documentary “Monkey Kingdom.” I assume “Home” will be the main competition for “Paul Blart,” as both are PG-rated.
