This is a “Jurassic World,” but it wouldn’t be anything without, uh, a Pixar film.
Mangled pun attempts on two classic songs aside, “Jurassic World” and “Inside Out” were neck-and-neck this Independence Day holiday weekend at the box office. Thanks to revised Monday numbers, “Inside Out” has finally reached #1 at the box office, earning $29.8 million (-43.1% from last weekend). Its totals to date are at $245.9 million domestic and $363.2 million globally.
Finally knocked out of first place is “Jurassic World,” which earned $29.2 million (-46.4%). The film’s totals now stand at $556.5 million domestic and $1.383 billion globally. It’s now the (non-inflation-adjusted) fifth highest grossing film of all time, finally surpassing the former champ, “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” It’d still have some ways to go to reach the fourth-highest-earner, “Furious 7.”
Elsewhere, the Phil Collins-lacking “Terminator: Genisys” came in third place with $28.7 million earned this weekend. Its totals to date stand at $44.2 million domestic and $129.7 million worldwide, thanks to a stronger showing overseas so far. Apparently, domestic audiences didn’t take a shine to this particular 80s/90s film franchise revival, unlike the aforementioned dinosaurs; “Genisys” has a 27% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Given its level of expectations (as a reboot) and the cost to produce (Forbes says $155 million), it’s definitely a disappointment, barring some lopsided overseas performance.
In fourth place, but with much better reviews, is “Magic Mike XXL,” the “Magic Mike” sequel, which earned $11.6 million this weekend. The film’s earned $26.7 million to date.
Dropping 67.2% from last weekend to fifth place is “Ted 2,” which made another $11 million. Its totals stand at $58.3 million domestic and $94.3 million worldwide.
In eighth place is “San Andreas,” which earned $3 million (-43.9%). The Rock’s film’s totals now stand at $147.4 million domestic and $446.6 million worldwide.
Dropping out of the top 10 are “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” “Mad Max” has earned $149 million domestic and $358.3 million worldwide, while the end of the “Age of Ultron” sees it having made $454.2 million domestic and $1.383 billion worldwide. Of course, it’s not the end of the age of Marvel films, as Disney’s all set to release its replacement, “Ant-Man,” in a few weeks.
Opening next weekend are horror film “The Gallows,” the Ryan Reynolds-starring sci-fi/thriller “Self/Less,” and the most prominent film, “Minions.” I expect both the dinosaurs and the anthropomorphized emotions to face a mutual threat in the yellow corn husk-like minions, given the latter’s popularity—and that “Minions” has already earned $124 million overseas.
