As a foregone conclusion, the top film this weekend is “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” The superhero sequel opened domestically with a Hulk-sized box office take of $187.7 million, which is good enough to become the second-biggest opening weekend of all time, behind the original “Avengers” ($207.4 million). Its overseas totals currently stand at $439 million, giving it a global take so far of $626.7 million. A few reports claim Saturday night’s highly anticipated boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao might’ve had an impact on “Age of Ultron”‘s box office, though how much is debatable.
I saw “Age of Ultron” this weekend, and thought it was OK. Yes, it’s what one expected from such a film.
Elsewhere in the box office, films without superheroes still pulled in some money. “Furious 7” came in third place, with a box office take of $6.1 million (-65.7% from last weekend). Its totals stand at $330.5 million domestic, $1.1 billion overseas, and $1.43 billion globally. “Furious 7” has surpassed “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” to become the fourth highest-grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation). It’s also within $90 million of passing the third top-grossing entry, the original “Avengers.”
In fourth place is “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2.” The film earned another $5.6 million (-62.4%), with totals standing at $51.2 million domestic, $24.2 million overseas, and $75.4 million globally.
In fifth place is “Home,” which took in another $3.3 million (-58.8%). Its totals stand at $158.1 million domestic, $168.1 million overseas, and $326.2 million globally. It’s now been in the top five grossing films for six weeks, and should soon surpass the domestic gross for “Shark Tale” ($160.9 million). Deadline notes “Home” is doing well in China, plus other countries where this weekend’s a holiday (May Day/Labor Day on May 1 in some places). In the UK, “Home” has already surpassed the UK box office totals for “Big Hero 6,” Wall-E,” “Brave,” “Despicable Me,” and the first/third “Madagascar” films.
Popping up in the top 10 again this week is “Cinderella,” which made sixth place (rising from last weekend’s 12th) with another $2.4 million (-14.8%). Its totals stand at $193.7 million domestic and $494.3 million globally. The film is still earning money, but more likely it’s “Age of Ultron”‘s depressing other films’ box office this weekend that let “Cinderella” show up again in the top 10 films.
Next weekend sees opening “The D Train,” a Jack Black starring comedy, and “Hot Pursuit,” a comedy starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara. I’d expect “Age of Ultron” to stay in the top spot even with a massive drop after this weekend.
