Coming this April is Xubuntu 12.04, “Precise Pangolin.” (A “pangolin” is some type of anteater.) A long-term service release of the increasingly-popular Xfce-based Ubuntu sibling (with updates and support provided for the next three years), it doesn’t plan on any radical changes, so seems like it’ll be pretty similar to the current version. Among what 12.04’s offering:
- An updated greeter and theme.
- Thumbnail support for the desktop, along with the ability to single-click items to open them.
- Updated touchpad/mouse dialogs.
- The usual general updates to the already-offered system packages and programs.
As of this writing, the second alpha for 12.04 is being offered for testing purposes.

For those wanting to avoid the bleeding edge or constant upgrades every six months, going with a LTS release is the best option.
