The winner of this year’s GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book has been announced. For the first time, “Lumberjanes” has won the prize!
The other nominees for the award were:
- Angela: Queen of Hel (Marvel), by Marguerite Bennett, Kim Jacinto, Israel Silva, Stephanie Hans
- Harley Quinn (DC Comics), by Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti, Chad Hardin, John Timms, Jed Dougherty
- Midnighter (DC Comics), by Steve Orlando, Aco, Hugh Petrus, Alec Morgan, Stephen Mooney
- The Wicked + The Divine (Image), by Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Kate Brown, Tula Lotay
2016 seems to be shaping up to be a big year for the “Lumberjanes” characters. Not only have they won this GLAAD award, but they’re also getting an inter-company crossover with DC Comics’ “Gotham Academy.”
The fates of the other nominees vary. “Angela” has been cancelled with issue #7. “Harley Quinn” is one of DC’s top sellers and is in the upcoming “Suicide Squad” movie, so she’s not going anywhere even after “Rebirth.” “Midnighter” has been axed as of “Rebirth,” with the character’s fate unknown. “The Wicked + The Divine” is still a big part of Image’s line of books. While it’s good that GLAAD acknowledges mainstream comic publishers’ LGBT characters, it’s interesting that the independent LGBT books nominated have a more solid future than the Big Two titles.
