Comics sales figures for July 2014 are in, and interestingly, the top-selling comic is… Marvel’s “Rocket Raccoon” #1. Apparently, a reseller of pop cultural merchandise bought a ton of copies, which probably helped its numbers. Speaking of anticipation for the film, Star-Lord’s own book came in at #9.
Meanwhile, the top 10 graphic novels/trade paperbacks list looks like night and day in comparison to the superhero-heavy “floppies.” The top-selling trade paperback is “The Walking Dead” vol. 21. The only DC or Marvel material in the list is “Deadpool vol. 5: The Wedding of Deadpool” at #6, and “Batman vol. 1: The Court of Owls” at #9. Given Deadpool’s basically a superhero-themed humor book, that means only one “straight” superhero title made the top 10 trade paperback list. Among the top sellers include the newest graphic novel by Bryan Lee O’Malley (of “Scott Pilgrim” fame); “Seconds,” at #5, the first volume of “Saga” at #4; and “Avatar: The Last Airbender” vol. 8 at #2.
Sales overall are up in the direct market (i.e., comic book shops) 14.52% compared to this time last year. Archie’s also mentioned as selling well, thanks to the “Death of Archie” issue of “Life With Archie.”
