As I’ve written before, one of Warner Bros.’s strong points these days (despite everything else about them) is they still have a strong physical media presence. Between their regular home video division and the more niche-oriented Warner Archive division, one can buy all of Warner Bros.’s biggest cartoons on DVD or Blu-ray, from the Looney Tunes to the Hanna-Barbera characters to the DC superheroes. If you want “Batman: The Animated Series,” “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!,” “Rick and Morty,” or Bugs Bunny, they’re all on Blu-ray.
Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for their longtime rival, Walt Disney. Disney is famous for their strong DVD and Blu-ray presence for their animated theatrical films, which have seen multiple re-releases over the decades (these days for 4K Blu-ray versions). However, when it comes to their television cartoons, Disney largely treats those as an afterthought at best, with few of them available on DVD or Blu-ray. (A chunk of their 2000s TV shows, such as “Teamo Supremo” and “Dave the Barbarian,” aren’t available on physical media, for digital purchase, or on Disney+.) It says a lot that I can buy a Blu-ray edition of a mid-tier 1960s Hanna-Barbera series such as “Magilla Gorilla” or “Frankenstein Jr. and the Impossibles,” but major Disney TV cartoons like “Kim Possible” and “Phineas and Ferb” have little DVD/Blu-ray presence. And while Warner’s kept Golden Age franchises like the Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry easily available on DVD/Blu-ray, Disney’s been lax about keeping the Golden Age Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy shorts available (either on DVD/Blu-ray or on Disney+, though the latter has gained some shorts).
Still, I thought it’d be interesting to look at the current DVD and Blu-ray availability of the classic Disney shorts characters (aka “Mickey and Friends,” per Disney’s official branding for such). The classic characters (sometimes called the “Sensational Six”) consist of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy, and Pluto. “Mickey and Friends” includes these characters, as well as any material or characters tied to them (such as Scrooge McDuck or Chip and Dale).
Classic theatrical shorts

Disney released a series of DVD “Treasure” sets in the 2000s collecting all of the Golden Age theatrical Mickey, Donald, and Goofy shorts. Unfortunately, they’re long out of print and expensive to buy, and Disney has zero apparent interest in re-releasing them (on DVD or Blu-ray).
Disney has released a handful of DVDs/Blu-rays with some classic shorts. They’ve also included the shorts as extras on some feature film releases. That said, some of these have fallen out of print or started to become scarce, and thus are starting to get pricey.
As far as I can tell, the best current options for buying the classic shorts are:
- Celebrating Mickey (Blu-ray; 13 classic shorts)
- Mickey & Minnie: 10 Classic Shorts, Vols. 1 and 2 (Blu-ray)
While not physical media, I also note that all Disney shorts made up to 1930 are now in the public domain. Thus, those are available for free from sources such as the Internet Archive.
Again, the fact the theatrical shorts that the studio is built on have little modern availability is a shame. While Disney+ has been adding more shorts, a modern re-release of the Treasure sets on DVD/Blu-ray would be nice.
Movies
Almost all of the feature films (and direct-to-video films) featuring Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and company available on DVD/Blu-ray:
- Fantasia (DVD, Blu-ray)
- The Three Caballeros (DVD, Blu-ray)
- Saludos Amigos (DVD, Blu-ray)
- Fun and Fancy Free (DVD, Blu-ray)
- Melody Time (DVD, Blu-ray)
- DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp (DVD)
- Who Framed Roger Rabbit (DVD, Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray)
- A Goofy Movie (DVD; Blu-ray via an expensive Disney 100th anniversary box set)
- An Extremely Goofy Movie (DVD)
- Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas (DVD, Blu-ray)
- Mickey’s Magical Christmas: Snowed in at the House of Mouse (DVD)
- Mickey’s House of Villains (DVD)
- Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers (DVD)
- Mickey’s Twice Upon a Christmas (DVD, Blu-ray)
Unfortunately, the 2022 “Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers” movie (made for Disney+) has yet to see any physical media release.
DuckTales (1987, 2017)

The original “DuckTales” series is available in its entirety on four separate DVD sets, as well as the 1990 theatrical film “Treasure of the Lost Lamp.” Unfortunately, the final volume was only released through the now-defunct Disney Movie Club; thus, it’s harder to find. A re-release of the first three volumes was produced as a box set in 2019, though even that’s getting harder to find.
As for the 2017 “DuckTales” reboot, to date it’s only had two DVD releases: “Woo-oo!” (the pilot and a half-dozen shorts) and “Destination Adventure” (with six episodes).
Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers
The first 51 episodes (out of 65) have been released to two DVD box sets. However, the best option is the 2022 Blu-ray release, which contains the entire series. The Blu-ray was released a few years ago to tie into the “Rescue Rangers” Disney+ movie.
Darkwing Duck
The “DuckTales” (1987) spin-off saw two DVD sets (collecting almost half the show’s run) released in the 2000s. Unfortunately, they’re now out of print (and expensive).
Goof Troop

In 2019, a DVD set collecting 54 of the show’s 79 episodes was released.
Fortunately, the theatrical film “A Goofy Movie” and its direct-to-video sequel, “An Extremely Goofy Movie,” are available on DVD. A Blu-ray release of “A Goofy Movie” was part of an extremely expensive Disney 100th anniversary Blu-ray box set (with 100 Disney/Pixar film titles).
Quack Pack
The short-lived 1996 series only has a single DVD release from 2006; unfortunately, the DVD only has several episodes, and is now out of print.
Mickey Mouse Works / House of Mouse
A handful of “Mickey Mouse Works” episodes were released on DVD in the 2000s in Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Some of the Donald Duck shorts are available on the final volume of the Donald Duck Treasures DVD set. And that’s all.
None of the “House of Mouse” series ever saw a standalone DVD release; its only DVD releases are the Halloween and Christmas direct-to-video movies (“House of Villains” and “Mickey’s Magical Christmas: Snowed In at the House of Mouse”).
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (and other Disney Jr. shows)
A handful of DVDs have been released for this long-running preschool show, but that’s all. No DVDs to date exist as of this writing for the recent reboot/revival, “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+”… and yes, the “+” is part of its name.
The same goes for the various related Disney Jr. series, including “Minnie’s Bow-Toons,” “Mickey Mouse Funhouse,” and “Mickey and the Roadster Racers”/“Mickey Mouse Mixed-Up Adventures.”
Mickey Mouse (2013)

The 2010s Mickey Mouse shorts saw two DVD releases containing a total of 26 shorts (out of the show’s run of 94 shorts and two specials), plus the half-hour Halloween and Christmas specials.
