Next St. Patrick’s Day brings not only the luck of the Irish, but also the, uh, prehistoric pro wrestling action? After the Scooby-Doo/WWE crossover, we’re finally getting the promised Flintstones/WWE crossover, “The Flintstones and WWE: Stone Age Smackdown.” The DVD release date’s for March 17, 2015, and marks the first animated Flintstones effort (excluding commercials) since the long-buried-for-some-reason 2001 TV-movie “On the Rocks.”
The trailer’s available on YouTube. From the trailer, the plot seems to be Fred planning to turn pro wrestling into his latest money-making scheme, using (apparently) the Rubbles’ pet prehistoric kangaroo (or “hopparoo”) Hoppy, among other things. It all looks pretty funny, even though I haven’t watched wrestling in years. My only nitpick is that Barney’s voice sounds a bit off; an attempt to imitate the nasally version from the first season? Also, I see CM Punk (as “CM Punkrock”) is in the film. While animation’s time-consuming and wrestlers have quit before, I gather his recent blowup with/quitting WWE isn’t affecting this video’s release at all?
Anyway, here’s the trailer. The animation and design styles seem based on the original series, though with appropriate updates. There’s minorities shown (yes, Bedrock has Black people), plus 2010s-style Stone Age devices/items—Pebbles has a modern-style toddler sippy cup, versus a 1960s-style baby bottle.
