Cartoons at the box office: “American Sniper” rakes in $90 million, “Paddington” opens in third

The top film this weekend at the box office is “American Sniper,” which raked in a record $90.2 million on its first wide release weekend.

Opening in third place is the family film “Paddington,” based on the classic British children’s books and featuring a CGI Paddington. The film earned $19.3 million; its overseas totals stand at $122.2 million so far, with a total global take of $141.5 million.

In fifth place is “Selma,” which earned $8.3 million (-26.6% from last weekend). Its total box office take stands at $26 million.

“The Imitation Game” came in sixth place again, earning $7.2 million (-0.3%). Its totals stand at $50.8 million domestic, $40.9 million overseas, and $91.7 million globally.

“Into the Woods” drops to seventh place, earning $6.5 million (-31.5%). Its totals stand at $114.3 million domestic, $26 million overseas, and $140.3 million globally.

“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” came in eighth place, earning $4.9 million (-48.2%). Its totals stand at $244.5 million domestic, $558.6 million overseas, and $803.1 million globally.

Falling out of the top 10 are “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” and “Annie.” “Museum” has earned $104.8 million domestic and $283.2 globally. “Annie” has earned $82 million domestic and $104.2 million globally.

Next weekend sees opening the thriller “The Boy Next Door,” comedy “Mortdecai,” and animated film “Strange Magic.”
