This week’s top film at the box office is “The Martian.” The film’s earned $55 million; including overseas earnings, it’s so far made $100.2 million globally, almost matching its $108 million budget. As I expected, Matt Damon’s recent controversial remarks about diversity didn’t hurt “The Martian” one bit. The recent news about water being found on Mars also helped raise the film’s profile.
Dropping to second place is “Hotel Transylvania 2,” which earned another $33 million (-31.9% from last weekend). The film so far has made $90.5 million domestic and $150.3 million globally.
In fifth place is “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials,” which made another $7.7 million (-46.4%). So far, the film’s made $63.2 million domestic and $211 million globally, with 70% of its box office from overseas.
In ninth place is “War Room,” which made $2.8 million (-34%). The film’s made $60.5 million to date, all on a $3 million budget.
In tenth place is “The Perfect Guy.” The film’s made another $2.4 million (-49.7%), bringing its total to $52.6 million, all on a $12 million budget, and all domestic. Apparently, no overseas release is coming, which being Hollywood (and its studio, Sony) isn’t surprising.
Opening next weekend is the newest Peter Pan film, “Pan,” and the expansion to wide release of a historical drama, “The Walk.”
