“Jurassic World,” the first sequel/reboot in the “Jurassic Park” series in years, showed the public reeeeally likes dinosaurs (and mosasaurs, pterosaurs, etc.). The film raked in a brachiosaurus-sized record $208.8 million on its opening weekend at the box office. It’s also earned $307.2 million overseas, for a global total to date of $511.8 million.
“World”‘s opening take comes as a big surprise, given initially mixed reviews, though its Rotten Tomatoes rating is now at a “fresh” 70%. “Jurassic World” has also broken various records: it’s the biggest opening weekend ever, beating previous record holder “The Avengers.” It’s also first time a film’s opened with over $500 million globally. Finally, it’s Universal’s biggest opening weekend ever, beating the studio’s previous record holder “Furious 7.” No doubt Chris Pratt and company will be back in yet another “Jurassic Park/World” sequel.
Elsewhere, everything else at the box office pales in comparison. In third place behind “Spy” is “San Andreas.” The Rock’s film pulled in another $11 million (-57.4% from last weekend); its totals stand at $119.3 million domestic, $188.5 million overseas, and $307.8 million globally.
In fifth place is “Pitch Perfect 2,” which made $6 million (-20.8%). Its totals stand at $170.7 million domestic, $89 million overseas, and $259.7 million globally.
In seventh place is “Mad Max: Fury Road.” The successful franchise revival made another $4.1 million (-47.3%); its totals stand at $138.6 million domestic, $184.1 million overseas, and $322.7 million globally.
In eighth place is “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” The film made another $3.6 million (-42.6%), bringing its totals to $444.7 million domestic and $1.355 billion globally.
In ninth place is “Tomorrowland,” which earned another $3.4 million (-52.5%). Its totals now stand at $83.6 million domestic, $93.5 million overseas, and $177.1 million globally.
Opening next weekend are comedy/drama “Dope” and the newest Pixar film, “Inside Out.” I have to wonder if “Jurassic World” will overshadow “Inside Out.” Even if “World” dropped a whopping 70% next weekend, that’d still be a $60 million+ box office. Still, it’s the first animated film opening in awhile, and the only animated one until “Minions” comes out in July.
