“Your two favorite heroes in one list of lousy passwords!”
While the World’s Finest team of Batman and Superman have made for decades of entertaining comics, they unfortunately don’t make for good passwords. The Dark Knight and the Man of Steel are both listed on a list of the 25 most common passwords of 2014, as determined by SplashData, a password manager company. SplashData got its data from various leaked lists of passwords. As such, the 25 most common passwords are also the 25 worst passwords.
Most of the passwords are the same poor ones seen year after year. The top password on the list is “123456,” which was also 2013’s most common password. Number two on the list is “password.”
Ironically, “TheDarkKnight” and “TheManOfSteel” would probably be marginally stronger passwords than what’s on this list. (Note: do not use “TheDarkKnight” or “TheManOfSteel” as passwords.) Of course, the recommended solutions of unique, strong passwords for each site online applies. As usual, I also suggest a password manager such as LastPass or KeePass.
Of course, as others have pointed out, it’d help if a lot of sites didn’t require us to create accounts just for a basic, one-time usage of something on that site. (There’s a reason Facebook, Google+ and Twitter logins are popular.)
