My thoughts
If wondering, the “Looney Tunes” movie “The Day the Earth Blew Up” got moved back by several weeks, from late February to March.
March sees arriving on video the ill-fated “Kraven the Hunter,” yet another attempt by Sony to make a Spider-Man Villain Cinematic Universe (or something) without Spider-Man. The film was a major bomb, earning $62 million worldwide on a $110-$130 million budget, plus a near-rock-bottom Rotten Tomatoes rating of 16% (and a Metacritic score of 35, firmly in the “bad” territory). Fortunately for Disney, they also have the billion-dollar hit film “Moana 2” coming out on video in March.
Also on Blu-ray is 1960s Hanna-Barbera series “Magilla Gorilla.” Hopefully this release includes the show’s classic theme song (“we’ve got a gorilla for sale, Magilla Gorilla for sale…”), which for some reason wasn’t on the previous DVD release. Otherwise, Warner Bros. usually does a decent job with actually releasing their shows to DVD, unlike Disney. I can buy a random Hanna-Barbera cartoon on Blu-ray, but a major 2000s-era show like “Kim Possible” is basically nonexistent on physical media.
The Academy Awards will air on March 2; not only is it on ABC, but also streaming live on Hulu. When it comes to streaming, the Oscars have been a major holdout until now. It’s also a reminder that for some reason, Disney hasn’t offered live streaming of local ABC affiliates through Hulu, unlike Comcast with NBC and Peacock, or Paramount with CBS and Paramount+. It might be Disney wanting to maximize revenue by limiting such to Hulu Live, their expensive cable replacement service. As usual, expect a post about the animation-related winners, even though I gave up on watching the Oscars awhile ago.
Netflix is streaming another “SpongeBob SquarePants” movie, this time featuring Plankton and his “computer wife,” Karen. The plot about the latter apparently going rogue.
