My thoughts
July brings us more of interest going on at theaters than on TV, though I suppose it keeps with being the peak of the summer blockbuster season.
July brings the first new Superman solo movie since the release of “Man of Steel” back in 2013, which… left much to be desired. With director James Gunn (of Marvel Cinematic Universe fame) on board, hopefully this outing with the Last Son of Krypton will be much more enjoyable and truer to the character. So far, a lot of the hype is centered around Krypto being in the film—I’ve seen some pet supply ads featuring the Dog of Steel, plus reactions to how cute he looks. There’s also the continued-from-the-comics debate over what breed Krypto is; the answer is… he doesn’t really have one? Traditionally he’s an unclear breed that (under most artists) vaguely looks like some terrier/Labrador mix. However, given how fluffy the movie version of Krypto looks, I expect his comic counterpart to follow suit (per fan art I’ve seen online lately).
Also out in July is the latest attempt at a “Fantastic Four” movie. Hopefully the umpteenth time’s the charm? Like “Superman” above, this film also features a traditional sidekick: HERBIE, the cute robot who debuted in the late 1970s “Fantastic Four” cartoon in place of the Human Torch. An urban legend claims Johnny Storm was excluded due to fears of kids imitating the Human Torch by setting themselves on fire; the real reason, however, was related to contract issues at the time. That said, the late 2000s cartoon “The Super Hero Squad Show” made fun of the whole idea.
On the home video side, “Sinners,” the most successful film not based on any pre-existing property or idea in awhile, hits video this month. It’s also heading to HBO Max on July 4. The 2018 animated film “Batman Ninja” is also getting a 4K release. The plot sees Batman, most of his supporting cast, and (for some reason) Flash villain Gorilla Grodd all accidentally sent back in time to feudal Japan, where hijinks ensue.
On streaming, Paramount+ brings another “Dora the Explorer” live-action film, featuring Dora and her cousin Diego. The original 2019 theatrical live-action film saw Dora face off against hired mercenaries in a jungle, which was the last plot I expected for a show aimed at preschoolers.
