Time for another blog status update.
Category name changes
For the past several years, I’ve tried to give the blog’s two main categories, “media” and “tech,” their own names to further make them seem like pseudo-separate blogs: “Diverse Tech Geek” (the overall site name, for tech posts) and “Diverse Media Notes” (for media posts). I even gave the latter its own custom logo.
However, I’ve decided to revert things back to the previous “media/tech” category names, and just brand everything under the overall site name. For starters, the “Diverse Media Notes” name never gained much traction. Even I just ended up using the overall site name when describing all posts. One factor might be “Diverse Media Notes” was a lackluster blog name; it also sounds too similar to “Diverse Tech Geek.”
Another reason: Diverse Tech Geek and Diverse Media Notes didn’t feel enough like separate blogs. All the post links still fell under the Diverse Tech Geek URL, without even using the “media” and “tech” categories in the URL (which might’ve helped). Using “Diverse Tech Geek” for both the tech blog name and the overall site name might also have come off as confusing. I note using categories as pseudo-separate blogs can work; see Newsarama under GamesRadar, or the Sherlock Holmes blog on Comics Worth Reading. Still, in my case, maybe it wasn’t good enough.
For now, I’ll continue to keep the media and tech posts as separate categories. Not everyone wants to read about Linux or streaming services on the same feed as comics and animation. Maybe I’ll reconsider the “pseudo-blog” (or actual separate blogs) approach in the future, albeit keeping the above concerns about URLs and naming in mind.
