My thoughts
Among the physical media releases this month, 90s environmental themed cartoon “Captain Planet” is getting a full series release to Blu-ray for the first time, timed for Earth Day (April 22).
Also out on Blu-ray for the first time is “Wacky Races,” the late 60s zany racing series that gave the world Penelope Pitstop, plus Hanna-Barbera’s mainstay villains Dick Dastardly and Muttley. At this point, “The Flintstones,” “The Jetsons,” “Top Cat,” “Jonny Quest,” “Scooby-Doo Where Are You!,” “Space Ghost,” and now “Wacky Races” are available on Blu-ray. I assume “The Yogi Bear Show” will get a re-release at some point, as it’s the now the most famous Hanna-Barbera show not on Blu-ray.
“Iyanu” is a new show debuting on Cartoon Network (and Max), in an increasingly rare instance of Warner Bros. paying attention to Cartoon Network proper (versus Adult Swim). The series is about a teenage girl who discovers she has supernatural abilities; it’s apparently set somewhere in Africa in the distant past?
Sports stuff
In a sign that spring is in full swing (and summer is approaching), the NBA and NHL playoffs both start in April. Also in April is the championship for NCAA college basketball, aka “March Madness.”
