While streaming services have changed a lot over the past few years (mostly not for the better), one thing at least has stayed the same: many offer profile avatar icons, usually with characters from shows on that streaming service.
Below, I take a look at the current state of profile avatars on the major streaming services. Or at least, as best I can. Note I don’t have access to some services (or their avatars), so I couldn’t cover them. Others I can sign into, but they won’t let me look at the icons without an active paid account. For those, I’ve done the best I can, between web searches and pulling from the 2024 version of this post. If anyone has any corrections (or better indications of what’s available), please let me know in the comments.
Amazon Prime Video
Prime Video offers avatars of their major shows, including “The Boys,” “Hazbin Hotel,” “Invincible,” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” That said, there’s relatively fewer choices for avatars versus their rivals; also, very few for animated programming, and none are for children’s programs. No original movies like “Red White and Royal Blue?” Or the third-party stuff they carry like PBS programming?

Disney+/Hulu
Disney+ shows off the large amount of assets they own with a large number of avatars. Everyone from Mickey, Donald and Goofy to the Simpsons to the Muppets to the Marvel superheroes are represented.
A recent addition, going along with increasing support for folding in Hulu, is avatars for Hulu related programming. If you want “Family Guy,” “Futurama,” “Bob’s Burgers,” and so forth, they’re now options. Disney Bundle subscribers will see Stewie Griffin listed right alongside Doc McStuffins among avatar choices. That said, there’s also a separate “adult animation” section for those characters.
Note the above Disney+ image is from a few years ago. I tried logging into my old Disney+ account, but without an active subscription, it wouldn’t let me access the profile avatars. However, all of the image’s avatars to my knowledge are still present.
HBO Max
HBO Max offers profile avatars for its various properties, or at least the ones they haven’t purged from the service. Current movies like “Superman” (2025) also get added as they arrive on HBO Max (that film’s icons include Superman himself, plus Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl, Lex Luthor, Guy Gardner, and Krypto), along with imports like the Crave series “Heated Rivalry.” There’s also a “fan favorites” section; cartoon characters there seem to include a “Rick and Morty” character (no, I don’t know which one), Scooby-Doo, Tweety, and the Powerpuff Girls’ Buttercup.
Last I used HBO Max, it had a pretty strong selection of avatars. But again, like Disney+, I can’t check the exact current state. I was able to log into my old account; however, without an active subscription, it wouldn’t let me see or change the profile avatar, which is currently set to Batman (what looks like the DCAU version).
Movies Anywhere
The digital movie locker service offers a limited number of profile icons for accounts. While Disney properties like Marvel superheroes are present (Disney runs Movies Anywhere), some from Warner Bros. (Harley Quinn, Batman) and DreamWorks (“Madagascar”) are also present.
My profile icon is Scooby-Doo (his puppy version from “Scoob!”).
Netflix
Netflix offers plenty of icons for its properties, both live-action and animated. Again, I couldn’t check my old account’s profile; unlike the others, Netflix seems to have deleted it outright after a few years’ lack of use. However, a web search suggests some of the major older ones I last mentioned are still present, along with some newer ones:
- “Carmen Sandiego” (Netflix reboot)
- “Gabby’s Dollhouse”
- “Boss Baby: Back in Business”
- “Jurassic World: Chaos Theory”
- “One Piece” (Netflix live-action adaptation of the anime/manga)
- “Big Mouth”
- “BoJack Horseman”
- “Disenchantment”
- “KPop Demon Hunters”
My old account’s icon was Sonic the Hedgehog from “Sonic Prime.”
Paramount+
Again, I don’t have a Paramount+ account anymore (so can’t directly check their profile avatars), and given their current owners, that won’t be changing anytime in the foreseeable future. However, when I did have one, Paramount+ offered most of their usual major franchises: “SpongeBob,” “Star Trek” (the Paramount+ originals, not the classic shows), and a handful of others. I assume if/when the Warner Bros. merger is completed, we’ll see icons of Warner stuff (DC, Cartoon Network, etc.) show up.
My old account’s icon was Sandy Cheeks from “SpongeBob.”
Peacock
Peacock offers a handful of profile icons. Most of these are from their current reality shows like “Love Island,” a few older ones like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Psych,” and popular Universal films like “Halloween,” “Jurassic Park,” and “The Fast and the Furious.”
If you’re looking for animation, your options are very limited:
- “Boss Baby: Family Business” (two characters)
- “Despicable Me” (one of the Minions)
- “Curious George” (George)
- “How to Train Your Dragon” (Toothless)
- “Trolls” (two characters)
- “Kung Fu Panda” (Po)
- Generic peacock icons
And that’s it. Never mind even Peacock’s animation library is bigger than this. No icons for the Grinch, Shrek, Puss in Boots, etc.?
The same glaring flaw I’ve noted before about Peacock still exists: Peacock doesn’t filter out adult profile icons for kids’ accounts, meaning you can add, say, Chucky from “Child’s Play,” or Michael Myers from “Halloween.” Strange this hasn’t been fixed, or that nobody’s noticed/complained about it. On top of all that, when setting up a new profile, it asks you to choose an icon first, before asking if it’s for a kids’ account.
My Peacock profile icon is the aforementioned Toothless.
