This weekend, the 26th annual GLAAD Media Awards were held. The awards showcase and highlight positive treatments of LGBT characters in mainstream media.

This year’s winner for outstanding comic is “Rat Queens” (Image) by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Roc Upchurch. The other nominees it beat:

  • Hawkeye (Marvel)
  • Lumberjanes (Boom! Studios)
  • Memetic (Boom! Studios)
  • Saga (Image)

The Mary Sue has a list of the other award winners. For some reason, there’s two GLAAD Media Award shows each year, which the awards are split between.

Comics Alliance notes that it’s not been the strongest year for LGBT-starring titles at the Big Two, with perennial GLAAD nominees like “Batwoman” shut out. However, they do anticipate things changing for next year, per Catwoman’s recent revelation as being bisexual, new titles like “Midnighter,” etc. Archie’s also supposedly planning a relaunch of “Kevin Keller.” Still, independent comics are doing an excellent job with LGBT representation.
