This week’s minorities in cartoons entry is “Class of the Titans,” a Canadian animated series that ran from 2005 to 2008 on Teletoon.
Background
The series‘ premise: after thousands of years, the imprisoned Greek god Cronus finally escaped, after a planetary alignment on New Year’s Eve. The Greek gods discovered and set out to fulfill a prophecy that states only seven teenage heroes (the “Chosen Ones”), descendants of some of the original Greek deities, would be capable of defeating Cronus.
Hermes sets out and rounds up said teens. He brings them all to a special high school where they can be trained by the gods themselves. The deities are disguised as their teachers to other mortals.
Cast
The teens include:
- Jay. The team’s leader, a descendant of Jason of the Argonauts.
- Atlanta. A descendant of Artemis or Atalanta, she grew up in Canada’s Northwest Territories and specializes in weaponry and tracking. She also possesses superhuman speed and reflexes.
- Herry. A descendant of Heracles/Hercules, Herry was raised by his grandmother. Like his ancestor, Herry possesses vast superhuman strength.
- Archie. A descendant of Achilles, Archie has some weaponry skills and strong stamina. He also wears a metal brace over his leg, including what he describes as his “wonky heel.”
- Theresa. A descendant of Theseus, Theresa is a wealthy teen with a black belt in karate. She also possesses some psychic powers.
- Odie. A Black youth who’s a descendant of Odysseus, Odie’s the only team member without some sort of a physical superpower. However, he possesses a genius-level intellect, inventive skills, and tactical abilities. Odie usually uses a moped as personal transportation.
- Neil. A descendant of Narcissus, Neil’s a vain, egoistical teen model who values his good looks. He also possesses an incredible level of luck, akin to Disney’s Gladstone Gander, which is what makes him useful on missions.
On TV/home video
“Class of the Titans” ran for two seasons, with a total of 52 episodes. In Canada, the series ran on Teletoon. In the US, the series ran very briefly on Qubo.
A few DVDs of the show have been released so far (mainly in Canada). The entire series is available for sale on digital video via Amazon.
