A look at various free streaming video services, from Pluto TV to Kanopy.
Rounding out my decade-by-decade top TV cartoon theme songs lists, here’s my choices of the top ten theme songs for the 2010s.
TV animation this decade greatly rebounded from the low point it’d hit in the mid-2000s, with many dynamic new shows coming along. On top of TV animation getting more attention, online and streaming services (YouTube, Netflix, etc.) also saw an explosion in animated material.
One trend that TV cartoons have unfortunately picked up from live-action broadcast TV is the shortening (or outright elimination) of theme songs. It’s all just to squeeze in more commercials, regardless whatever excuses TV networks may make about “keeping viewers from changing channels” or “more time for the story.” That said, the 2010s also saw a rise in the number of 15-minute-long cartoons, which might justify a shorter theme song.
“Adventure Time” debuted as a half-hour series on Cartoon Network in 2010. It’s since become one of the most popular cartoons in the 2010s, and one of Cartoon Network’s biggest shows.
“Steven Universe” is Cartoon Network’s other major hit animated series in the 2010s, running from 2013 to 2019.
“Gravity Falls” ran on Disney XD for two seasons, which aired from 2012 through 2016. The show features the adventures of a pair of twins spending the summer in a small Oregon town where every conspiracy theory in the book happens.
“Wild Kratts” is a PBS show that debuted in 2011, featuring the Kratt brothers learning about and protecting nature.
A spinoff of the Dreamworks film “Turbo,” “Turbo FAST” ran for three seasons on Netflix.
OK KO! Let’s Be Heroes
“OK KO! Let’s Be Heroes” ran on Cartoon Network from 2017 to 2019. Its theme song’s short, but retro-sounding (as if from the 70s or 80s).
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
“She-Ra” debuted on Netflix in 2018 as a reboot of the 1980s “He-Man” spin-off.
Star vs. the Forces of Evil
“Star vs. the Forces of Evil” ran for four seasons from 2015 to 2019 on Disney XD. The opening animation changed several times (reflecting the show’s story arc), but the music’s stayed the same.
Molly of Denali
“Molly of Denali” debuted in 2019 on PBS. The show features the adventures of an Alaskan Native girl in the fictional Alaskan village of Qyah.
Ready Jet Go
“Ready Jet Go” is another PBS show, which debuted in 2016. The show’s focus is on teaching basic information about space, from the planets to how gravity works.
