“Hair Love” animated series to launch on HBO Max

Matthew A. Cherry’s Oscar-winning animated short “Hair Love” is receiving even more attention. News came this week that the short’s characters are receiving their own 2D animated series on HBO Max; the series is titled “Young Love.”

The original “Hair Love” short began life as a Kickstarter campaign, where it raised nearly $300,000.

An Entertainment Weekly article summarizes the series’ premise:

The new series, Young Love, will expand the story of the Young family from the short. The 12-episode first season will focus on millennial parents Stephen and Angela, daughter Zuri, and pet Rocky “as they juggle their careers, marriage, parenthood, social issues, and multi-generational dynamics all while striving to make a better life for themselves,” according to a logline description.

As far as I know, this is the first time Zuri’s parents are named, plus the revelation of the family’s punny last name “Young.” (I’m reminded of the Prouds in Disney’s “The Proud Family.”) Zuri herself is named in the children’s book version of the animated short.

I assume Angela’s job will be what she did in the original short: running a vlog on African-American hair care.

Also of interest is that this show’s appearing on HBO Max. “Young Love” gives me something to look forward to watching, if and when I ever try the streaming service again. However, that’d require a bunch of changes and improvements to HBO Max. (TLDR, HBO Max needs: Roku support; an improved slate of older and newer DC Comics animated and live action material; a “Boomerang” label for its classic Western animated material; and finally, a more affordable price point.)

Cherry, along with Carl Jones of “The Boondocks,” will serve as show runners. It’s not clear if the same voice actors from the short will return, or when the new show will debut.

Until “Young Love” debuts, enjoy watching the original animated short.
