Minorities in cartoons: Grace Choi

This week’s minorities in cartoons entry is Grace Choi, a DC Comics superhero. Grace first appeared in “Outsiders” (vol. 3) #1 (August 2003); Judd Winick and Tom Raney created Grace.

Background

Grace is the daughter of an unknown human and a “Bana-Mighdall” Amazon; they’re an off-shoot tribe distantly related to the more famous Amazons of Wonder Woman fame. Despite said tribe (as far as I could tell) not really having powers, Grace has the usual enhanced abilities (strength, stamina, speed) that all Themysciran Amazons possess.

As a child, Grace was a captive of a criminal ring that exploited children. However, upon reaching puberty, Grace’s powers emerged, which she used to escape. Grace eventually wound up working as a bouncer at a nightclub in Metropolis.

One day, Roy Harper (Arsenal, also known as the former Green Arrow sidekick Speedy) approached Grace with an offer to join the Outsiders, which she accepted. As an Outsider, Grace had various adventures on several incarnations of the team. She also briefly worked with the Birds of Prey.

A later storyline showed Grace in a relationship with Thunder, the daughter of Black Lightning.

Other media

A DC Nation animated short starring Thunder and Lightning mentions Grace; Thunder’s seen sending Grace a text message.
