Here’s the usual obligatory update on what I’ve been doing with the blog.
Yet another new web host
At the start of the year, I moved Anthony’s Notes to a new web host, MDD Hosting. MDD’s a small hosting company based in Indiana, and was recommended by various tech types online.
It’s worked fine, with no complaints. However, this weekend I worked as a volunteer at Seattle’s WordCamp. WordCamp’s a weekend-long conference about all things WordPress, plus other related subjects (including blogging). Various vendors sponsored the event. One of them was SiteGround, a popular web host. SiteGround offered WordCamp attendees a free year of web hosting, so I thought I’d take them up on it.
SiteGround moved my site for me, and did it fairly quickly. So far, I haven’t had any noticeable problems. The only oddity is a lack of icons appearing in my cPanel installation, though it’s still usable. Among SiteGround’s features include more web account space over the old host.
One blog I follow, Black Girl Nerds, made mention some time ago of its own move to SiteGround.
Updating older posts
I’ve been going through and updating some of my older blog posts. While I started awhile ago, a few WordCamp seminars discussed making posts easier to read. In particular, I’ve been updating the more “evergreen” posts, such as the minorities in cartoons ones. I wanted to make them less “wall of text”-like and easier to read.
Thus, I’ve: added line breaks; formatted some information into bullet points; added subheadings; and for particularly long posts, an extra graphic. I’ve also edited some posts for updated information and brevity.
The Yoast SEO plugin, which I use for SEO purposes, has also added a “readability” analyzer, which has helped.
Yet another new blog theme
I’m also changing the blog’s theme again. One reason is I wanted a more popular, easier to manage theme. The previous one (Beetle) required what felt like a lot of manual editing via CSS/PHP/plugins to get it how I wanted. Choosing a new theme isn’t easy, but WordPress’ theme filters helped narrow down things a lot. Also of some help are a few recommendation posts on sites like WP Beginner and WPMU.
Reactivated Facebook page
I’ve also reactivated the blog’s Facebook page. Posting links to my personal profile didn’t seem to be working out as well as I’d hoped.
