Cartoons at the box office: “Furious 7” now fifth top-grossing film of all time

“Furious 7” once again tops the box office charts this week, adding another $18.3 million (-37.4% from last weekend) to its by-now-enormous gross. The current standings of “Furious 7”: $320.5 million domestic, a whopping $1 billion overseas, and a global total of $1.3 billion. 75% of its total gross to date is from overseas. As of this writing, “Furious 7” is now the fifth highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing “Frozen.” Within days from now, it should displace the #4 entry on that list, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” For overseas sales alone, “Furious 7” is the third-biggest of all time, after “Avatar” and “Titanic.”

Elsewhere, “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” came in second place with $15.5 million (-34.8%). Its totals stand at $44 million domestic, $17.8 million overseas, and $61.8 million globally. Even with lackluster reviews, the film’s a success financially, as it only cost $30 million to produce. Expect “Mall Cop 3: Return of the P.I.?”

In fourth place again is “Home,” which earned another $8.3 million (-21.8%). Its totals now stand at $153.8 million domestic, $145.3 million overseas, and $299.1 million globally. Imagine “Home” should reach or pass $300 million by tomorrow or Tuesday. Still, good news for DreamWorks.

Dropping out of the top 10 are “The Divergent Series: Insurgent” and “Cinderella.” “Insurgent”‘s global totals stand at $271.1 million, while “Cinderella””s stands at $474.6 million.

Next week kicks off the summer movie season with the opening of the one film that might beat “Furious 7″‘s billion-dollar gross, “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” The “Avengers” sequel has already opened overseas, where it’s so far earned $201.2 million.
