Cartoons at the box office: “Cinderella” takes first place

As expected, Disney’s live-action “Cinderella” has taken first place this weekend at the box office. The film scored a whopping $70 million on its opening North American weekend. Combined with the $62.4 million it’s already earned overseas, it’s earned a total of $132.5 million globally, more than its $95 million budget. Running the new animated short based on “Frozen” might’ve helped score attention, on top of being the first new family film release in awhile.

Elsewhere, “Kingsman: The Secret Service” came in third place, earning another $6.2 million (-25.4% from last weekend). Its totals stand at $107.4 million domestic, $150.3 million overseas, and $257.7 million globally.

Dropping to fifth place from last weekend is last weekend’s #1, “Chappie.” The film made another $5.8 million (-56.5%), giving it a total of $23.3 million domestic, $13.7 million overseas, and $37 million globally. Yep, still a flop.

In seventh place is “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water,” which earned another $4.1 million (-38.5%). The Sponged One’s totals stand at $154.7 million domestic, $116.2 million overseas, and $270.9 million globally.

Opening next weekend is the Sean Penn thriller “The Gunman” and the next “Divergent” film installment, “The Divergent Series: Insurgent.”
