Cartoons at the box office: Fifty shades of greenbacks

As expected, despite much head-scratching/debate over its themes, “Fifty Shades of Grey” topped the box office, pulling in a huge $81.7 million. Box Office Mojo notes it’ll probably drop off after this weekend, with Valentine’s Day over.

Dropping to third place is last weekend’s box office champ, “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.” It pulled $30.5 million (-44.8% from last weekend). The sponge one’s totals stand at $93.7 million domestic, $46.3 million overseas, and $140 million globally (almost twice its $74 million budget). With a holiday in much of the US tomorrow (Presidents’ Day), it should easily reach¬†$100 million Monday.

In fifth place is “Jupiter Ascending,” which pulled in $9.4 million (-48.7%). So far, it’s earned $32.6 million domestic, $58.9 million overseas, and $91.5 million globally. Still looks bleak even with international sales, given its $175 million budget.

In sixth place is “Seventh Son,” which earned $4.2 million (-42.5%). The film’s earned $13.4 million domestic, $83.6 million overseas, and $97 million globally. While it’s a clear flop domestically like “Jupiter,” it seems to be a success outside North America, so should easily make its budget back.

In seventh place is “Paddington,” which pulled in another $4.2 million (-20.5%). So far, it’s made $62.3 million domestic, $154.2 million overseas, and $216.5 million total.

In eighth place again is “The Imitation Game,” with a $3.5 million (-24.8%) take. The film’s totals stand at $79.7 million domestic, $76.9 million overseas, and $156.6 million globally.

Coming in tenth place is “Project Almanac,” which earned $2.7 million (-47.8%). So far, it’s earned $19.6 million domestic, $3.4 million overseas, and $23 million total, almost double its $12 million budget.

Several films open next weekend: comedy “The DUFF,” sports drama “McFarland USA,” and the likely champ (unfortunately), “Hot Tub Time Machine 2.”
