The first trailer for “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens”‘s been released

“Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens,” the first Disney-produced “Star Wars” film, will be out in December 2015. Today saw the film’s first trailer released. While initially it was going to just be released to select theaters, then online, it looks like they’ve decided to release it to both simultaneously.

For the sake of this post (and a cheap, lazy way to boost my blog’s traffic), here’s the trailer:

Besides the lack of the likes of Jar Jar Binks (I hope), one thing that stands out is the depiction of a Black man wearing a Stormtrooper suit, as well as a woman, which hopefully bids well for some diversity. According to my Twitter feed, there’s apparently already grumbling about both from the usual online racists/misogynists…who apparently have forgotten about Samuel L. Jackson and Billy Dee Williams.

Also in the trailer’s some sort of cute little robot (who hopefully won’t be 2015’s Jar Jar), and someone wielding a new version of a lightsaber. Besides the usual long blade, it also has two shorter laser blades making up the “handle.” While I suppose they wanted to make it look cooler/update its look, adding two shorter laser blades like that just makes it look like it’d be even more dangerous and unwieldy to hold, even for an experienced user. (“If only you knew the power of—*AAAGH!*… *a decent health care system…*”)

Finally, since I didn’t comment on it before, yes, Episode VII is subtitled “The Force Awakens.” While I guess it’ll be OK for a subtitle, it lends itself to plenty of jokes; mine for Twitter was wondering if the Force “hates Mondays.”

Jokes aside, I’m fairly optimistic about the sequel, and will go see it next December.
