This week’s minorities in cartoons entry is “Girls With Slingshots,” a webcomic that ran from 2004 to 2015. “Girls” was created by Danielle Corsetto, and ran on weekdays.
The strip revolves around its two main characters, Jamie McJack (pictured above, left) and Hazel Tellington (pictured above, right), two friends who deal with various slice-of-life situations, including dating, their jobs, and so forth. The cast of characters has grown to a fairly large size.
While there’s some wacky elements to the strip (such as a talking cactus), it also features some serious elements, including subjects related to sexuality.
Several of the strip’s LGBT characters include: Thea, an African-American woman; and Jamie herself, who’s in an open relationship with another character, Erin.
Over its run, “Girls With Slingshots” has been collected into several books, and crossed over with a few other webcomics (“Something Positive” and “Shortpacked”). “Girls” also won a Friends of Lulu award in 2009, and a Reuben Award for “online comics” in 2015.
