A live-action Archie movie has been announced!

Life With Archie #18Archie and Warner Bros. have announced that a live-action movie based on Archie is in the works. The movie’s being written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who works on the Fox TV show “Glee,” and wrote the “Archie Meets Glee” crossover. The director is one Jason Moore, whose credits include the movie “Pitch Perfect.”

Contrary to some reports, I presume the movie won’t have zombies despite Aguirre-Sacasa also being the writer of the proposed “Afterlife With Archie” comic due later this year (about zombies overrunning Riverdale). Never mind by the time this movie hits theaters, zombies probably will be long played out. There’s also that one goal of this film will be to get the Archie gang back in a non-comics form, which is A) needed to keep the characters in the public eye (beyond publicity stunts like meeting KISS), as the characters haven’t appeared in non-comics media in well over a decade since “Archie’s Weird Mysteries” was cancelled; and B) worked quite well for Sabrina, the Teenage Witch via her sitcom.

Speaking of sitcoms, I still think Archie should’ve been turned into a TV sitcom rather than a movie. It’d be perfect for the Disney Channel or Nickelodeon, or maybe the CW, where—when it was still “The WB”—“Sabrina the Teenage Witch” wrapped up its lengthy TV run. I suppose if the movie’s successful, there’d be a chance of such a TV spinoff.

Speaking of casting, I wonder who’ll be cast as the various members of the Archie gang. Since I’m not that up on actors, I’ll leave the guessing to others. As for characters in the film, however, I’d like to see Chuck, Nancy, and Kevin show up. Cheryl might be an interesting choice as well, though Veronica might already be enough for the “beautiful rich spoiled girl” contingent for one film. (Sequel, maybe?)
